What Everyone Needs To Know About HVAC Systems

Why HVAC Maintenance Is Important And What You Should Be Doing

by Amelia Martin

HVAC refers to your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning in your home. These things run your home to keep them at the proper temperature throughout the year, whether it's freezing in the winter or steamy in the summer — your HVAC system works for you. If you aren't maintaining your systems properly though, your systems could fail you and you could end up with much more problems than you would have had if you had maintained your units. Read on for reasons why HVAC maintenance is so important and what you can do.

Why Is HVAC Maintenance Important?

Maintenance of any running appliance in your home is important to keep them running properly. Look at your units — furnace and air conditioning — as appliances that need to be cared for. The ventilation around your home is the vents in each room and the ductwork that runs from these appliances to your rooms in your home. If you aren't maintaining these things, imagine how much dust and dander would be floating around your home. Imagine how much debris could be in your vents, including mold and mildew. HVAC maintenance ensures your systems will work properly each and every year, but it will also help ensure the air you are breathing in is safe and healthy as well.

What Can You Do?

Some maintenance tasks you can do on your own, while others should be left to the professionals. Here are a few tasks.

Clean The Units

Your exterior air conditioning unit should be cleaned with a garden hose before, after, and at least once or twice throughout the season. This is because pollen and other outside contaminants can clog the fans of the unit and leave it running sluggishly. Your furnace should also be cleaned the same way, although with a vacuum extension hose, and it is usually clogged with dust, dander, and pet hair.

Change The Air Filter

The systems use an air filter that helps trap pollutants inside the fabric of the filter to prevent these from flying about in your home. If this filter is clogged with debris, it can shut down your systems, or cause these pollutants to get into the system and blow about your home. Change the air filter once per month.

Clean The Vents

Your ventilation system also needs to be cleaned, although you may only be able to get in so far to the vents themselves. Cleaning the ventilation system should be done yearly, but a deep clean should be left to the professionals.

Your HVAC systems need to be maintained in order to run properly and to keep your family safe and healthy. Hire an HVAC company to maintain your systems for you.
