What Everyone Needs To Know About HVAC Systems

3 Reasons Your AC System May Not Be Working Correctly

by Amelia Martin

If you are like most homeowners, you have an air conditioning system in your home. However, just because you have an AC system doesn't necessarily mean that it is working properly. Many people's AC systems are working below full capacity when the solution is a simple correction. Here are some reasons that your AC may not be working properly and some ways to fix the problems.

1. Your Air Filters Are Clogged

Air filters play an important role in the functioning of your AC system. They help to filter and clean the air that goes through the actual system. Thus, if the filter is dirty, it will not only compromise the quality of the air in the home, but could affect the AC's ability to blow air throughout the house. One common reason to have problems with your filter is that you have construction nearby. If you live in an area where they are building houses and there is lots of dust in the air, your filter will get dirtier quicker. This is especially the case if you are remodeling your home or finishing a basement. You should expect to replace your filters often in such cases.

2. The Ducts Are Obstructed

Another reason why you might not be having success with your AC system is that the ducts are clogged. The actual AC unit can be working great, but if the ducts have dust or debris in them, no matter how good the system is, you will not get enough air circulating throughout the house.

One sign that your ducts are clogged is if the house is cooling unevenly. One room might be very cold, while the room right next to it is warm. This is probably because the duct is clogged somewhere between the two rooms so all of the air is being sent to the first room and can't get through the entire house.

3. The Outdoor Unit Is Dirty

Lastly, you should be paying attention to how clean your outdoor unit is. In the fall or after a storm, you might notice lots of leaves and debris around the unit. This can affect how well the entire system will work, which is why you should install the outdoor unit in a place away from shrubbery, trees, or vegetation nearby. This will protect it from getting overly dirty.

By knowing what to look for, you can protect your house and make sure that your AC is working properly.
